THE ROSE WINDOW
Lyon Cathedral
Lyon cathedral has 3 main rose windows and four additional ones! In the north & south transepts they date from before 1250 and on the west facade the rose dates from the 1390s. There is a helicoidal spiral rose in the Bourbon Chapel, and two circular windows at the end of the aisles facing east. Finally an east-facing rose high above the crossing crowns the collection.
| North rose; The theme is the "Triumph of the Church" with The Church at the centre surrounded by angels, every other one seeming to be falling! There are more angels in the outermost layer with Christ enthroned at the head, and the Creation of Eve at the bottom. The donor d'Arnoud de Colonges can be seen at the extremity of the window at 8 o'clock? 1240-50 and C19. |

| South rose; With 12 divisions and 6m in diameter the theme of the window is that of the Redemption with the Fall on the right and scenes from the life of Christ on the left. The dove of the Holy Spirit at the centre is modern, with angels in first layer, then at the summit Christ, with the 4 Evangelist symbols, Adam & Eve, the tree of Good and Evil, the Expulsion from the Garden, Adam digging and at the bottom Christ liberating the souls in Hell; at the top left is the Annunciation, Nativity, Adoration of the Magi, the Crucifixion and the Holy Women at the tomb; 1235-40 with much C19 restoration. |

| West rose; This oldest surviving flamboyant window dates from 1394 (and C19) and was constructed by Henri de Nivelle with a diameter of 6.2m. [See page XXXXof "The Rose W|Indow" for an anlysis of the structure, and p. XXX for illustrations. The window features the lives of Ss Stephen in interior cycle of openings and John Baptist in the exterior. (Only three of the St Stephen panels and been deciphered: The Stoning (below), Disputing with the Jews (right), and being Ordained Deacon (above to left). The scenes of John the Baptist are more legible beginning at the lower left with the Annunciation to Zachariah, then The Birth of St John, The Visitation with Mary, two unidentifiable scenes, Salome brings the saint’s head to Herod, Ss Elisabeth and Joachim, the Glorification of St John, Dispute with herod, the Baptism of Christ, the saint, the crowd at the River Jordan, the saint Preaching in the desert. Heads of children and satirical figures in the smaller windows. |

| North east rosette; some 2.2 meters in diameter ths window has a collection of twelfth, thirteenth and fourteenth century pieces in the six lights around the central crucifixion. Three of them are scenes of a saint being led by an angel (c.1185; from a Last judgement scene?); a very restored scene of God on a throne (C13); St Peter is put on a cross in the lowest light and is Crucified upside-down (above and to the left; also late C12), while below him is a person before a king with the executioner standing by | ![]() |
| The high rose over the crossing has 8 segments, with God Father in Glory, seated and with an orb, surrounded by 8 saints; 3 of the highest lights have C13 pieces; the middle and lower sections have C15 pieces, although it is all very restored. | ![]() |
| The spiral rose in the Chapel of the Bourbons; with a diameter of 2.5m and 12 divisions, there are some C16 pieces amid the mostly C19 glass featuring the arms of Charles de Bourbon, Cardinal archbishop, 1466-78; the chapel was built in the late C15 by Pierre de Paix. |
