The Old Covenant
(After the Hortus
Deliciarum)
The outer circle of 8 figures and 8 naturalistic designs refer
to the sacrifices of the Old Covenant. The four patriarchs in the inner circle are Aaron, Moses, Abraham, Melchisedek.
They are joined by the menora as the seven-fold Spirit, two further 'sacrifice' scenes and an altar with 10 loaves
of bread.
At the centre is the two-headed figure of Moses and Christ
(detailed photographs forthcoming)
The inscription round the circumference reads (in translation)
"The rite of the Law and the blood of animals teaches us that the world should be purified of their sins")
