The Tree of Jesse - some early examples ____ click on an image for enlargements

The Tree of Jesse was a favourite way of displaying Christ's ancestory from King David's father Jesse. The prophet Isaiah alludes to a messiah who will originate from Jesse and the Evangelist St Luke refers to this (Chapter 4:17). St Matthew also refers to this lineage emphasising the importance of the Virgin Mary in this lineage via her husband Joseph (Chapter 1:23). The oldest Tree of Jesse in stained glass is the example in St Denis that dates from the period 1140-44. Here are some examples from the twelfth and thirteenth century.
